  • Bedtime always comes too early
  • Sharing is good, but some things are your own
  • Skin can be any color and still be beautiful, and the sky can sometimes be pink with orange polka dots instead of blue with white clouds
  • It’s okay to color outside the lines
  • No one died from eating candy once in a while
  • Everyone is a prince or princess in the making
  • Mom and Dad are the best, even when they aren’t fair
  • A bad day only has to last a few hours
  • Explore things, even when it’s scary
  • Stripes and plaids can make a cool combination
  • Outdoors feels more fun, even in the rain
  • Going barefoot beats wearing shoes
  • Dirt comes off, so don’t worry about it so much
  • I can be one way today and another way the next and that’s okay
  • I’m not always hungry at the same times each day
  • People and life and the world are more good than bad

Children.  They teach us as much as we teach them.  What are some of the things you’ve learned from children?

Finding Yourself

Remember when it became a cliche for one to say:  I’m just trying to find myself.

It begins in childhood when we are full of curiosity about everything and everyone.  It begins in our childhood explorations of self, life, people, and the world in which we live.
So many questions!  And one day, we realize that we are not the center of the universe, but that we are indeed an integral part of the scheme of things.

However cliche the expression may be, it still applies to many of us, and it will apply off and on throughout our lives.  Try to imagine finding yourself, your place on the planet, only once in a lifetime.  Life changes, and so do we.  Whatever you found in your 20s will no longer fully apply in your 40s, or 50s, or any other particular age.

We can, however, define our core values.  They are those things, once discovered, that we realize were somewhere just left of center, lying within us, at birth.  They are only waiting for us to discover them.

The secret of who you are does not lie outside of yourself, but it is snuggled deep within you.  Begin your efforts to find yourself and your purpose on the inside.  And then you have your foundation, your core essence, and it is that on which you base decisions the rest of your life.

To begin finding yourself, use today as a new starting point.  Get quiet and be with yourself alone at some point each day, just to hear your own voice and observe your own thoughts.  Let them come at random and without force.  Look them over.  Learn what they can tell you about your present self.  Jot them down, if you wish, as a way to reinforce what you learn about yourself each day.

Are you at one of life’s tipping points today?  Are you able to get alone with yourself each day to rediscover who you are now?  Or who you wish to become?
